Peter Sears

Oregon's 7th Poet Laureate, 2014-Present, Peter Sears won the 1999 Peregrine Smith Poetry Prize with The Brink, which was published by Gibbs-Smith Publisher. The book then won the 2000 Western States Book Award in poetry. His latest book, Green Diver, appeared in fall of 2009. His poems have been widely published. In 1993, Sears founded the Oregon Literary Coalition. In 1997, with Kim Stafford, he founded Friends of William Stafford, and in 2001, with Michael Malan, he founded Cloudbank Books. In 1999, Sears was awarded the Stewart H. Holbrook Award from Literary Arts. In 1998, he won a comparable award from the Oregon State Library. For many years Sears taught high school English and coached. To teach creative writing brought him to Reed College in the early 1970s. He is presently on the faculty of the Pacific University low-residency program in writing. He also teaches composition at Portland Community College. Sears is a graduate of Yale University and the Iowa Writers Workshop. He lives in Corvallis.
